Chapter 6 discusses mainly how to start building the networks within your given field. Regardless of the field you enter, building networks are going to be incredibly important. In my opinion, the networks you build can make or break your success. The chapter gives a great summary on the different types of networks there are. The chapter also goes on to discuss the immense amount of ways to create a network from tools, like social media platforms.
In my opinion, this part of the chapter is the most important due to the fact that social media plays a large role in everyone's day to day lives. Whether it is for personal use, or for professional use, there is no denying that social media is something that can be used to build different networks. For example, I currently work at a car dealership and when the dealership is looking for a new employee, managers will use different resources such as Indeed and LinkedIn in order to find candidates and then will find the candidate on social media to get a sense of the type of person they are.
In my future career, I understand how important building networks are. A lot of times, building networks can be the difference of receiving a job or not. For instance, as a finance major, if I decide to go into a Financial Planning career, a network will be the most important thing for me. If i do not build a strong network from the beginning, chances are, I will not be very successful in what I do. As previously mentioned, building networks are important in whatever field it is.

Hi Peter! I agree that the most important part of the chapter is that social media plays an important role in our lives and can give an abundance of opportunities for professional use. It is interesting that even car dealerships seek social media profiles to determine what kind of person they are. It is indeed a good way to find out certain information about someone and how they would work in a learning community.
ReplyDeleteHi Peter! I agree that this chapter showcases the importance of connecting to a personal network through social media. We have everything by our fingertips, we just don’t use it to the full capacities. Since social media is a big part of everyone’s life nowadays, why not use it to build or connect to new networks? Connecting to the right networks or individuals is key when trying to brand yourself. You must filter out all odds and only connect to individuals or companies that interest or motivate you. After all we all are trying to get new ideas and knowledge by connecting to different networks. Using LinkedIn for me as helped me connect with other people who share similar interests as me and work in the same field as me.

ReplyDeleteAs a Hospitality & Tourism Management major, networking is a huge part of our career success. I agree that many different industries rely on networking through social media to expand their brands. As many people know, LinkedIn is a great tool to use to help network with people in your industry. The unfortunate part is many people only use one type of platform to network, and there are so many other options out there to expand their networking lists. I also found it interesting that car dealerships are using social media to look for new employees. I enjoyed reading your post, great job!

It was also good that you used a current personal experience to relate to the chapter, when you talked about the car dealership.
